Tourists Told To Get On Their Bikes
Tourists have been told to get on their bikes with the start of the New Zealand’s national cycleway project and the first of seven ‘quick start’ projects launching in July. The ‘Ruapehu – Whanganui – Nga Ara Tuhono’ trail, which runs from Ruapehu in the central North Island to Whanganui on the western coast, will form part of the ongoing ‘Great Rides’ national cycle network is due to be launched on the 2nd of July by PM John Key.
The first cycle trail, which travels through land protected by the Department of Conservation (DOC), will be launched on 2 July by New Zealand Prime Minister Mr John Key.
The launch of the Ruapehu – Whanganui trail will take place at Ohakune Railway Station with a karakia or MÄori blessing and an official ribbon-cutting ceremony by Mr John Key. The prime minister will be one of the first to ride a mountain bike on the new cycle trail.
The Raetihi – Mangapurua Track is an historical highlight of the cycle trail, as it crosses the ‘Bridge to Nowhere’ and passes through Mangapurua Valley soldiers settlement within Whanganui National Park. The bridge was built in the 1930s for the first settlers – soldiers who were given land by the New Zealand government for their service during WWI.

Hello, thanks for sharing Have a good days..
New Zealand is so progressive…I loved all the hiking trails there, and obviously the commitment to ‘green’ extends to encouraging bike riding as well. I wish here in America we would follow the example of the Kiwis…you guys have it all figured out. I hope to return to your beautiful country some day. Cheers!
You are more than welcome to visit – cheers – KB
“Sandie” — haha, I love it! Thanks
My fiancee and I have been separately, and may well return some day (honeymoon?). Only thing that’s stopping us is the 20+ hr flights and a very large dog who would never forgive us for leaving her behind! Maybe we could use a boat…
ps, sorry I forgot to change my name field — it autofilled it, and now when I go back to edit I can’t change that part. Didn’t mean to spam, apologies.
How about “SD”?
ps pets are tough to bring to New Zealand (if you are moving there). Obviously it is an island with a large agricultural industry to protect so there are stringent rules, but it is possible.
wish I was there
Me too, will be back home Tuesday (sounds like a song).
I myself love cycling, cycling is a great hobby that can be a sport, well I would definitely say that this area is a great area to go to
Once the new cycle ways are complete, it will be much easier to travel throughout the country and much safer too in terms of traffic.
Bike trails, just perfect for people who like to go slow on their ‘nature trails’. Country wide cycle network has another feather in it’s cap with this trail.

I approve such decision because bikes are more eco-friendly and more useful for our health than cars.
Bikes are often seen as a means of ‘recreation’, as Anna said they are a real alternative for commuting with cars and bikes. It’s a healthy and eco-friendly option and can provide the much needed ‘time alone’ to many bikers.
And what is about the native population of this country? Do they maintain this decision to get on their bikes?
Absolutely
How funny! Will it be a permanent action or just a temporary measurement?
NZ is building a National Cycleway System throughout the country..so permanent.
