Murray From Flight of the Conchords in Pirate Movie (Video)
Our kiwi friend Rhy Darby AKA Murray from Flight of the Conchords stars with Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Boat That Rocked.
It’s about a band of rogue DJs that captivated Britain, playing the music that defined a generation and standing up to a government that was determined to control the air waves. Like a lot of countries (including New Zealand, remember Radio Hauraki), the laws about broadcasting were strictly controlled by licenses, mostly public owned systems. It took a small band of music lovers, and a mobile transmitter station, preferably 3 miles off the coast to keep the music alive.
Radio Hauraki officially started broadcasting on December 4, 1966 on board the Tiri off the coast of NZ. During the next 2 years, the crew on the Tiri would endure adverse weather conditions, fatigue, and continued efforts to shut down the station. In mid-1970, the state monopoly on radio frequencies was broken, and Radio Hauraki became the first private station to broadcast. I am just old enough to remember listening to them.
