Just to introduce myself, my name’s Ellie and I’m writing on behalf of the Global Peace Index (GPI).

First of all we would like to sincerely thank you for previously including the GPI in your blog in the past.

As you’ll be aware, the GPI is a ground-breaking piece of research in the study of peace, which not only ranks nations by their peacefulness but also seeks to identify the drivers of peace. Now in its fourth year, the Index is produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace, a global think tank dedicated to the research and education of the relationship between economic development, business and peace. It is collated and calculated by the Economist Intelligence Unit.

We’re getting in touch to alert you to the fact that the next Global Peace Index will be launched on June 8th 2010. We’ll be providing you with further information closer to the time – unless you tell us that you’d rather not hear from us again – but thought you might appreciate the heads-up in the meantime.

Well coming from the UK I am not surprised that we are not on the list. It is so hectic especially in London. I had New Zealand or Canada on my list of chilled out places. It is good to see they both feature.

That’s great for New Zealands reputation as a clean, green and peaceful country. Being a New Zealander living in France I love hearing these types of things about my home country.

Well, the US sure ain’t on that list! What am I doing staying here then….maybe I should reconsider and make it to one of the top ten! I used to live in Canada for a few years and it truly is more peaceful…which is so less stressful and relieving.

I fully agree that New Zealand is the most peaceful country. First of all, have a look at her location. They can’t really have any enemies at all, because all countries are far away from New Zealand. Except of Australia, but it is peaceful too. Of course low rate of violence is a huge advantage too. I hope to live there few years of my life. Thanks for the interesting article!

Well well well.

I can see why NZ clocked in at number one but as an Australian it always grates to see you Kiwis getting anything to crow about.

It doesn’t really gel with what my NZer colleagues at work tell me but then again, they’re from South Auckland which apparently is some no-go zone.

All the peaceful countries are pretty well off. NZ’s GDP and purchasing power is good. The least peaceful are mostly poor except Isreal and Russia. Maybe being on a beautiful island far from clamoring neighbors is one important factor.

oh that is nice. Peacefulness is definitely one of the pieces of a happy life. Step by step if those violent countries could be just a little more like NZ, Denmark, etc and the whole world could relax a little. I wonder if we can engineer a more peaceful life, with more politics focusing on it. Of course the top countries are very wealthy and the least peaceful pretty poor apart from Isreal and Russia.
