This is from the Pancake Dessert House in Bourke St Melbourne (Australia) which is funny enough a Chinese/Cantonese restaurant. In Australia and New Zealand, ingredients for pancakes usually consist of egg, milk, flour etc. (similar to the English style, rather than the American version), and are typically eaten as a dessert, although, like in America, can be often served for breakfast. Popular toppings include maple syrup, butter, peanut butter, jelly, jam, or assorted fruits such as strawberries. In both countries pancakes can also be served within a savory meal or with golden syrup.

A staple of the kiwi diet is Chelsa Golden Syrup. Chelsea Golden Syrup in the iconic tin is the original produced since 1884. It is the Golden Syrup that should be used for baking as it has a thicker consistency and richer caramel flavour, but is liberally spread on pancakes (or pikelets) by kiwis of all ages.

So you can see that sweet and sour do mix. We personally prefer sweet.
