Wow! I’m completely impressed he was able to convert a car that was so old to an effective electric car! More people need to see his site and realize that this could be a whole new, and environmentally friendly option for their old junkers!

In the spirit of Burt Munro, Bill Hamilton and other passionate and innovative Kiwis the NZ electric car is the business! Like the blow-by-blow progress starting right from the pick-up and towing… keep it up.

@Joey:
I’m no expert, but I think older cars are easier to convert. They have less unnecessary electronics and whatnot and their mechanical systems are usually simpler. Not only that, but they have a more solid steel frames, so ripping out the old engine is less likely to cause dangerous damage to the structure. Also, take a look at the car itself – it is somewhat boxy looking, so there is more space to work in. New cars have more curves, which IMO, waste space.

I’m sure the older cars aren’t too terribly bad to convert. It will be interesting to see what happens to the prices of these conversions once the manufacturers start mass producing the parts.
I wonder if any company will offer kits for specific vehicles.

This is a really important step in the correct direction.
Just like any other effort, the more positive talk that surrounds the effort, the more momentum that will build.
I have included information regarding positive self talk above, and how important getting anything done depends on it.

I’ve read Gav’s post, he was very resourceful and ingenious! Unfortunately, because he only needed it for limited travel, he was able to get away with less capable parts for the lower driving time and higher charge time available. This won’t be practical for a lot of readers – but it is inspirational
