This is an outstanding accomplishment.
As an engineer, I must say that for a team to be doing what this team is accomplishing, especially with the type of fuel being used, requires a very complete knowledge of several advanced engineering disciplines.
From a US perspective, New Zealanders are respected because of their “tradition” of holistic engineering knowledge.
For example, when we refer to a boiler maker in the US, we are normally referring to the engineering theory involved with making a boiler. In New Zealand, on the other hand, a boiler maker has command not only of the theory but also of installation and maintenance.
Mr. Beck’s comment regarding not limiting his team to a “niche” is therefore very much in keeping with the image of New Zealand engineering.

Interesting video. If he succeeded in doing this he must be a genius. Some countries haven`t made it this far in their research and here we have one man showing us that if you want to, you can send something to space.

My brother loved to build small rockets, so this was fun to see. A larger version that actually was useful!

But the second stage booster – housing the much more vital scientific payload technical data – or “the bit we really want,” as Mr Beck puts it, is still lost at sea.

If so, it’s phone and GPS could be partially under submerged, with the water obscuring the signal.
