Kiwi Jetpack Gets Ready for Takeoff (Video)

...some time ago.. by kiwibloke · 19 Comments

Almost a year to the day after it first got worldwide attention, the Martin Jetpack is back on show at the United States’ annual EAA air show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and Christchurch’s Martin Aircraft Company is also announcing plans to allow the public to try out a “low, slow” version.

Christchurch will be the location for the first business offering jetpack flights, and the company plans to expand with franchises around the world.

Wow, that is one cool jetpack – I have always wanted to be able to fly on one of those things since I was a little kid. Now if they could just shrink it down a bit.

Definitely an idea worth exploring but practical applications may be a long time away. It’s a matter of economics and like those future commercial flights to outer space, the indulgence of the wealthy and privileged.

wow, it can fly for 30 mins? imagine the things you can do with that amount of time… although it looks quite huge and getting around may be close to impossible, with that attached to your back but i certainly would want to have one of those… im calling my mom to get me that toy pronto.. :D

I hope this ‘takes off’! its great to see NZ pushing the boundaries and i think this concept could work – its only going to be for a minority with some cash, but imagine commuting to work like this in a big city – crazy!

When I was growing up, there was a TV show like that. It looked so cool, to fly around w/a pack on your back. Now it would scare the pants off of me. I prefer to sit back and enjoy the views with my telescope binoculars. Cheers!

I always think of the dated jetpack from the James Bond movie but this has come a long way and looks very easy to control, I will be in line for one in the future. Also a message to Kiwibloke, I enjoy your blog, lots of great stuff.

The garden shed inventor is alive and kicking. I love these guys who build things in their sheds as a labour of love and then take it through to commercial development. They’re so intense and passionate about what they do, it’s pretty infectious. Thanks for the vid.
