Kiwi DreamGirls Cause Stir in Bollywood

Six Kiwi-Indian girls have been given the chance to perform with the leading lights of Bollywood including Aditi Bhagwat and Shiva Rindhani.
Sharmista Chakraborty and five other girls from Auckland have joined the cast to perform alongside leading stars of India’s Bollywood film industry in the musical “Dreamgirls of Bollywood”.
“I’m really excited and looking forward to it. It’s something I haven’t done before but I love dancing, I love being on stage,†says Sharmista. The 26-year-old, who emigrated from Kolkata (Calcutta), has been practicing classical Indian dance for over 20 years.
Dreamgirls tells the story of Sajili, a young girl living in a small town. Training as an Indian classical dancer, Sajili has been selected by her Indian dance teacher to carry on his life’s work to all four corners of the entire country. However Sajili wants to become a Bollywood star … and be the greatest diva of them all.
Dreamgirls is playing at the Skycity Theatre Auckland from April 15th.
