Kiwi Cowboy Wilson Dixon (Video)

Submitted by on April 7, 2009 58 Comments

“Life is like a salmon swimming upstream,” he says. “Hard work. And sometimes you get eaten by bears.”

Wilson Dixon AKA Jesse Griffin is heading to the Melbourne Comedy Festival.

Dixon is Jesse Griffin’s alter ego cowboy who act covers everything from the cowboy ballad to sharp observations of life, not unlike the Flight of the Conchords:

Dixon is the alter ego of Jesse Griffin, and they’re both going places. The 35-year-old expat Kiwi spent most of the past 12 months in the UK developing his country and western character with the likes of Steve Coogan’s production company, Baby Cow, and has just returned from London after recording a series of four half-hour specials with BBC Radio. He was one of only two comics selected by the BBC for the gig (the other was shouty Irish sensation Jason Byrne). He’s back home for the Melbourne Comedy Festival with Wilson Dixon Rides Again.

Wilson Rides again is story told in song about the break up with his wife and the journey he takes with his horse Andrew.

Griffin was born and raised in Dunedin NZ on a farm which may account for his love of country music and down to earth philosophy from the back of a horse, Andrew of course. Griffin (and Dixon and presumably Andrew) are playing at the Melbourne Comedy Festival, 1st through 26th April.
