Gandhi has Friend on Salt March
The bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi was decorated today with a stuffed dog no doubt accompanying the icon on his path to the salt mines.
The statue was a gift from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations in 2007, on behalf of the people of India, to the city of Wellington. The statue was the first of Mahatma Gandhi to be erected in New Zealand, it was made by noted Indian sculptor Gautam Pal.

This statue looks like real masterpiece of art! Very magnificent!
Okay, so this is either out and out irreverent, or a bit of tongue-in-cheek fun! I’m not sure I can decide, but it’s a cute puppy nevertheless, so I’m prepared to guess the latter. the question how long will it be before somebody takes offence and it’s hastily removed?

I think it was just a bit of fun. You would have to be a real d**khead to denigrate Gandhi.
Is this a joke or the soft toy is a permanent fixture? The statue indeed looks lifelike. What’s the text written on that plaque? Are there many Gandhi statues in NJ?
No…it is a bit of humor. The text..a note about the gift from the people of India to Wellington… and you mean NZ not New Jersey, and no this is the only one I think. All the others are dead prime ministers and Queen Victoria.
Remember the formal Head of State for New Zealand is Queen Elizabeth II. The NZ parliament acts on behalf of the Crown and her representative is Sir Anand Satyanand is of Indian descent and was a Lawyer…just like Gandhi.
Did the dog really accompanied him on this salt march? I mean I didn’t knew he owned a dog or wasn’t aware about his love for pets especially dogs…..!!!!
Thanks for sharing such a nice pic. of this statue here.
I don’t like statues made of bronze – they look cold and unfriendly to me.
A small fluffy dog should help.
Hey the dog is really cute. But it would turn dusty I wish there was a bronze one accompanying the great personality.
Everything is beautiful except the dog – it looks funny and not at its place there.
I donot like the statue, the dog is the bad part of it, gandhi such a great personality but the message going though this statue is not fair
HI.I am really glad to see this nice pic.the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhiji is not only the man who deserve this hounour but also for the city of Wellington and its citizen.
Statue looks so real.. It looks so cool. Nice share.
Is this a joke? Or is this stuffed dog a permanent fixture? Maybe it should represent a ‘gift” for Ghandi? Anway, it looks like an appreciable masterpiece of art!!!
Thanks for sharing.
Everything is really beautiful in this pic – except the dog. the dog looks funny, but in my opinion it does not fit at all in this picture.
