Cute New Zealand Parrot Turns 100

The endangered Kakapo (Maori for night parrot) has met a milestone of 103 parrots in the recovery program, and have managed to double the population in 10 years (Note: super cute baby Kakapo pictures in link):
The kakapo population has for decades been only in double figures, but a Department of Conservation kakapo recovery team set up over 20 years ago has been working to grow it.
Mr Groser said the recovery team had been watching a handful of chicks hatch on Codfish Island, off Stewart Island, over the past few days.
Those developments meant the world population of kakapo was now 103 – more than double the number of kakapo alive a little over a decade ago
The Kiwi parrot has been on the endangered list for over 20 years and is one of the oldest living parrot (Nestor) species at approximately 70 million years old. And it is the world’s only flightless parrot.

You know I love birds! Thanks. I’m glad the kakapo is coming back. I didn’t know there were flightless parrots, either.
That is truly inspiring to know that with proper parrot care, the Kakapo has produced a lot of offsprings…Cute!
I absolutely love birds and especially parrots, this is the first that I have ever heard of a bird living to this age that is truly amazing and its a good looking bird, now if they are living to this age they are going to be come heirlooms:)
The Kakapo is an amazing bird, too bad it is in such a desperate state. Hope that this and all parrot species continue to do well. It would be tragic to lose any.

I love parrots and this goes to show with properly care and love a bird can live that long.
I love parrots and they must be one of the few household pets that can outlive their owners. It is interesting that this particular parrot is the only one that is flightless.

This species has a long way to go. It really is a beautiful parrot and is the only non flighted parrot. The pic almost reminds me of a Green Cheek Conure, of which I have as a pet coincidently named Kiwi, LOL
I blog frequently and I genuinely thank you for your content.
