Scooters Scour South Island
A clutch of Kiwis on scooters are preparing to assault New Zealand’s Southern Alps on a winter-time expedition – the Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari – that will take them across the South Island. The safari is to raise funds for the New Zealand Cancer Society. Started in 2009, the Scooter Safari was created by Jayne and Mike Rattray. The idea to ride coast to coast as a fundraiser was born in support of Mikes friend and colleague at Air NZ Engineering who had just been diagnosed with Bowel Cancer.

Riders will set off from Christchurch on 29 May to travel the 250km to Hokitika on the west coast. The endurance ride – across the Canterbury Plains, through the mountains and along the rugged west coast. The Arthur’s Pass route through the Southern Alps is one of New Zealand’s great drives, and a popular route for motorists in cars and campervans but not usually on scooters.
Scooter Safari organiser Jayne Rattray says about 170 people have registered as riders, including Air New Zealand staff and their chief executive Rob Fyfe – who also participated in the inaugural ride in 2009.
Tranz Alpine scenery
The Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari follows a scenic route across New Zealand’s largest island. Highlights include Arthur’s Pass National Park, Otira summit, heritage hotels and homesteads, and local businesses. New Zealand is also well known for a quality expresso in the middle of no where and the Southern Alps is no different.
Other refuelling stops include ’hot cuppas’ at Kirwee Tavern near Christchurch, classic Kiwi meat pies at the award-winning Sheffield Pie Shop, and muffins and tea at Flockhill Lodge on the Great Alpine Highway.
The final part of the ride will follow the West Coast’s Great Alpine Highway, a region of diverse scenery, terrain and climate.

I’ve never heard of such an event as scooter safari and never have taken part in it. But it would be interesting.
It would be a lot of fun driving through the countryside with friends on scooters
You know what they say about scooters and overweight women. The more you drank the more dangerous they become.

You don’t know that scooter is very famous for the rich. Most of the time scooters become good fashionable vehicles that the rich people use to transport. And Scooter’s value will increase with the time.

There we some guys that did a similar thing last year but when from I think Timaru to Nelson, now that’s nuts.
I appreciate Tranz Alpine Scooter Safari organizers from the bottom of my heart. New Zealand Cancer Society is an eminent resource creating incredible awareness and provides top notch information on cancer topics. I wish lots of volunteering like this pops up in the future for a noble cause like this. It will be great if you post some pics of the event as a blog post here. We would really appreciate. Thanks in advance. I also sincerely pray for Mike’s friend.
