What could be the sleeper movie of the year, local kiwi hero Peter Jackson, through Wingnut Films, is producing District 9 directed by South African Neil Blomcamp . Neil previously an animator on such films as Smallville and Stargate, is directing his first film after Halo was canned because of Neil’s inexperience. It was Jackson that refused to consider anyone else other than Blomcamp.
The movie District 9 looks from the promo above to be a reality science fiction set in South Africa. Aliens have arrived in South Africa during the Apartheid period and are set to live among the human population which devastating results.
It remains to be seen whether this is a political statement from Blomcamp but even if it was, from what we know it will be a compelling piece of work. There are lots of clues on line including a cryptic website D-9 and a blog called Mnuspreadslies. General release in the summer holiday (North America) season.
Let the fun begin.
