Kiwi Academy Award Winner Anna Paquin has hit the headlines with her character Sookie Stackhouse in the HBO series True Blood. True blood is another masterpiece from Six Feet Under writer Alan Ball.
Stuff NZ describes True Blood it this way:
On the contrary, in the world of True Blood, vampires have been “normalised” into society as an underprivileged minority.
Following the invention of a viable synthetic blood, with which vampires can nourish themselves instead of predating upon humans, the vampire race decided to “come out of the coffin” and integrate openly with the Earth’s dominant species.
Anna Helene Paquin was born in Manitoba Canada to a New Zealand Mother Mary. They moved to New Zealand when she was 4 years old. It was in New Zealand in 1991 that Paquin became an actress by chance. Acclaimed Kiwi Director Jane Campion was looking for a little girl to play a key role in The Piano, set to film in New Zealand, and a newspaper advertisement was run announcing an open audition. Paquin’s sister read the ad and went to try out with a friend; Paquin herself tagged along because she had nothing better to do. When Campion met Paquin—whose only acting experience had been as a skunk in a school play—she was very impressed with the nine-year-old’s performance of the monologue about Flora’s father, and she was chosen from among the 5000 candidates that auditioned.
When The Piano was released in 1993 it was lauded by critics, won prizes at a number of film festivals, and eventually became a popular movie among a wide audience. Paquin’s debut performance in the film earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress at the age of eleven, making her the second-youngest Oscar winner in history after Tatum O’Neal.
When she was younger, she wanted to be the Prime Minister of New Zealand, or a lawyer. We of course look forward to her political career but she is probably going to have to take a paycut.
Madison Michele sits with Anna who talks about her win for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series/Drama for True Blood. Anna also shares with Madison how winning a Golden Globe is different from winning an Oscar at age 11 for the Piano. She also talks about the casting process for TRUE BLOOD. She sounds just like Zoe Bell!!!

i love her since i saw her in x-men, so cute and nice and how beautiful eyes she has, they make her look kind of naive and even more attractive. I think she looks better as a brunette though

What’s the difference between Golden Globe and Emmy? ok maybe it’s a stupid question for you but I really don’t know. Btw, I’m glad Anna won!

The difference between an Emmy and a Golden Globe is that an Emmy Award honors those who work on televison. The Golden Globes honor those who work on both television and film, with more specific catagories.

Is the show good enough to watch? My friend said it is but I don’t believe him.
12 inmyownblood // Feb 26, 2009 at 1:31 pm
i liked it..the only reason i watched it was bc the same guy did six feet under..theres alot of surprises and i was kinda iffy about it since its about vampires n supernatural stuff, but i think its a gr8 story, kinda like a thriller for every episode..alan ball’s spin on it is definitely worth watching

23 DVenom666 // Mar 18, 2009 at 3:49 pm
It is definetly not the kind of mainstream series like Lost or kind like it, but if you like charming and sometimes bizarre shows then it is your piece of work!
24 utah county cars // Mar 19, 2009 at 10:44 am
I’m not a big fan. I just can’t get into it and vampires don’t really do anything for me. I’ve tried to watch it twice and I just can’t do it.
25 kiwibloke // Mar 19, 2009 at 2:34 pm
Fair enough True Blood is not for everyone.

Canada my ass, she’s a true blue kiwi girl – she won an OSCAR when she was 11 y.o. for her performance in the NZ movie The Piano (remember? with Holly Hunter and Harvey Keitel?) Go Anna!
33 luvmykai // Mar 25, 2009 at 5:42 am
I also luv her as Rogue in x men.
34 ama1063 // Mar 30, 2009 at 4:54 am
Seems like she’s completely lost her Kiwi accent. Perhaps she came over to the U.S. years ago and lost her accent??? Any Anna fans out there that can shed a light?
35 greenoliver18 // Mar 30, 2009 at 8:50 am
rogue… you are living god!!! wow… i love you…
36 fookhar // Mar 31, 2009 at 1:43 pm
How is Lost mainstream?
37 DVenom666 // Apr 1, 2009 at 1:44 pm
Nearly every 2nd human watches it, it is hyped worldwide, videogame is made of it, etc.

40 doctorbellacullen // Apr 8, 2009 at 1:21 am
she speaks with out her accent for american things as it means more directors pick her and can see her in roles a lot of aussie and kiwis do it untill there really famous
41 airesbart // Apr 15, 2009 at 12:04 am
she is canadian…she just grew up in nzl
42 luvmykai // Apr 16, 2009 at 2:28 am
yes but left when she was 3 years old…she considers herself a kiwi since she grew up in NZ. It doesn’t matter anyway, she is an accomplished actress who both countries are proud to call their own.
43 ConstanceWest // Apr 26, 2009 at 9:13 pm
I hope she makes another xmen movie as Rogue. Especially now, that they’ve finally cased a Gambit.I think Anna’s Rogue, and Taylor’s Gambit would look absolutely adorable together
44 teasymphony // Apr 27, 2009 at 8:13 am
She definately deserved it. She’s such a natural actress, and this role seems tailor-made for her.
45 BrianMak // Apr 28, 2009 at 1:17 pm
True THAT!!! They’re the same age, AND they’re both Canadians playing Southerners. It’ll be like the “Gone with the Wind” of superheroes. lol. I’m actually relieved they chose someone who not only CAN pull off Gambit, but look good with Anna.
46 1966Zodiac // May 1, 2009 at 6:08 pm
She already won an Oscar when she was 11.

Her accent is actually all over the place., SHe doesn’t chose to speak with an American accent. She has lived in the US since she was around 17 or somewthing, so it’s not that weird she has american accent. Sometimes you can hear her New Zealand accent pretty well, and sometimes not
49 sannaols // May 8, 2009 at 5:59 am
She IS from Canada, though. She was born there and moved to New Zealand when she was 4
50 kiwigalposter // May 15, 2009 at 3:41 am
Her mother is new zealander right? Her dad canadian. Let’s just say she’s both. Even in this interview…she says she’s from New Zealand 2:28!
51 sannaols // May 26, 2009 at 6:15 am
Yes, but she’s born in Canada. Watch her interview with Criag Fergusson and you’ll see
52 ContradictingJeremy // May 28, 2009 at 12:38 pm
I really do hope they’ll make one with the two of them in it, but it’s unlikely because of the time gap.
53 ContradictingJeremy // May 28, 2009 at 12:39 pm
She’s such an amazing actress. She totally deserved that award.
54 r0se4nne // Jun 4, 2009 at 1:19 am
she sounds so odd without the southern accent. haha.
55 sorry997 // Jun 8, 2009 at 2:26 pm
Who else was nominated for that award beside her?
56 MusicalFreakGurl // Jun 10, 2009 at 12:04 am
I just read on IMDB, she was born in Canada but moved to New Zealand when she was 4. So she’s actually canadian.
57 laina423 // Jun 11, 2009 at 3:11 am

Anna has been massive in New Zealand and steadily growing throughout the world since The Piano. She is a quality actor and deserves the accolades she gets. Her roles as Rogue in the XMen movies were also fantastic.
