...some time ago.. by Kiwi Bloke · 7 Comments

Lotus has developed an external sound system for hybrid and electric cars. The problem they are solving is that these cars at low speed are too quiet for the visually impaired who use sound to guide them where cars are coming and when they have passed. This makes a Toyota Prius sound like it has a V8 in it.

I think this is a ‘must have’ technology and safety feature specially for 3rd generation hybrid cars, which is not only concerned on the driver and passenger in the car but also pedestrians as well

Funny how the trend is now reversing; loud cars were once considered a nuicance by many, save maybe the self-proclaimed hip youngsters. Now we need to make our cars louder for safety! A positive development I guess :D

This is totally awesome. You’re right John, back in my days people really hates loud cars, LOL.

Lack of noise was always something that put me off electric cars from the drivers point of view. Everone loves the roar of a powerful car. Well I do at least.

Hi, love your post, I think hybrid cars are the future.

Well done, I think it is an important problem. In 1920s when there was the first electric car craze in USA some companies fitted a rattle on an axle to make the car noisier!

Actually I hate the sound of roaring engines, I would much rather listen to the songs that are playing on the radio without having to turn it up so loud to where it covers the sound of the engine.
