The VW Polo Blue Motion that Richard Hammond raced from Basel to Blackpool in last years season of Top Gear is now up for sale in the UK Auto Trader (via Blackpool Gazette)

Now the car, which has just 5,500 miles on the clock – is for sale on the Auto Trader website with a price ticket of £11,990.

In the advert for the car, Autotrader said: “The Polo is not a powerful car, but it was chosen because it boasts an average fuel economy of 74.3mpg and a tank range of 736 miles.”

One of the most economical, if not fast, car’s on the European market today, the VW Polo has the distinction of being what Jeremy Clarkson describes as being the satan of all that is automotive evil, an Oil Burner.

With release of Google Latitude and the birth of wide spread people tracking technology, we are onto the next stage of improved social tools at the expense of privacy. From the Google Blog:

With the addition of location information along with credit information, corporations can track to an even greater depth what you can and cannot do.

Recently it was reported in the New York Times that American Express was changing your credit limit based on where and whom you shop with:

In recent months, American Express has gone far beyond simply checking your credit score and making sure you pay on time. The company has been looking at home prices in your area, the type of mortgage lender you’re using and whether small-business card customers work in an industry under siege. It has also been looking at how you spend your money, searching for patterns or similarities to other customers who have trouble paying their bills.

Not only is it possible to see your transactions at the local Cash Converters or Value Village, simply being in the vicinity of a Dollar Store makes you a credit risk. This ability will soon be available to any developer:

In the meantime, with Latitude Google is moving to commoditize both the map information and the location beacon. Google is using triangulation data from cellular networks, and Wi-Fi positioning along with GPS data for its Latitude offering. It is only a matter of time before this location information is made available to other developers for free, especially Android app developers. After all, Google needs apps for its Android platform, and more importantly it needs developers to think differently.

The issues do not stop at intrusive corporations, according to Privacy International it can also extend to unwanted attention from unsavory types:

“The company has a long way to go before it can capture the trust of phone users. As it stands right now, Latitude could be a gift to stalkers, prying employers, jealous partners and obsessive friends. The dangers to a user’s privacy and security are as limitless as the imagination of those who would abuse this technology.”

Couple that with long time Google wannabe, Microsoft Live Maps and you have a potential problem waiting to happen.

The Hamilton 400 was held a couple of weeks ago. Those of you who have grown up down up know of the 40 year old tussle between Holden and Ford that culminates each year at the Bathurst 1000. The series is known as the V8 Supercars. Unlike NASCAR, it has retained since 1960 the Stock car format, which means that the cars must come off a normal factory assembly among many other rules. The upshot is that these cars can be purchased for road use (albeit detuned) from such tuners as Holden Special Vehicles. What this means is that the racing is far more exciting than NASCAR because the cars are real family saloons that we drive to work and the racing is far more visual than what you can expect from a NASCAR race.

I have been reading Bob Cringley over at PBS for the last 10 years and he has always managed to amaze me with his insight. Here is another great one this week.

The problem with advertising in online video is that it has been limited to pre-roll and post-roll (just before and just after the show), which doesn’t work to the advantage of shows like NerdTV that can be more than an hour long. This is the biggest single reason for YouTube’s 100-megabyte limit on the size of submitted videos.

I maybe a bit slow but the YouTube business model is coming clearer. It is a giant short form ad network with pesky 4 minute videos in the middle of the valuable pre and post advertising.

Still not worth $1B until they can prove this works. Valley Wag has their view of the world.

“It’s a real joy to get to share my film with people who are excited about it,” says filmmaker Travis Boles of Fanboys Productions. The title of the film is Three in the Afternoon, and right now, it’s playing on YouTube.

Filmmaker Travis Boles has used Youtube to sucessfully build viral marketing around his short film. He does however lament that there is a real risk that the old media companies will sue YouTube out of existence.

Of more importance, the current conflict in the Middle East has taken to the YouTube with pace. Where as the highly filtered output of the Western Media adopts a similar view of the conflict, a whole new crop of filmmakers are attempting to provide their point of view. On Seattle Times:

He wrote on the Web site: “This video brings back haunting memories from the 82 israeli invasion of Beirut — I was then only 4 years old — But the lasting impact of these blasts has never left me. … For those lucky enough to have not experienced a war during their lifetime, it may appear to you that you understand all about it by watching CNN, BBC, or reading the papers. … This video is an attempt to give you a more realistic sense of how terrifying a war can be on innocent civilians. … and kids, just like me, 24 years ago.”

This can only help to bring different points of view to the conversation. The reason is because Video has a sense of immediacy to it as well as it is easier to consume for large audiences who don’t have to wade through sites like Steve Clemons The Washington Note, which is very good but very wonkish.

YouTube is the Social Networking site of the first decade of the twenty first century. It is turning out to be a valuable resource as an alternative to the filtered delivery on the mainstream media.

Youtube, the outrageously popular Video site now serves over 100 million video views per day. What is even more interesting is that YouTube serves as a virtual water cooler for millions of TV viewers:

YouTube videos account for 60 percent of all videos watched online, the company said. Videos are delivered free on YouTube and the company is still working on developing advertising and other means of generating revenue to support the business.

Popular television events have had played significant part in the popularity of You tube. The famous World Cup incident with Zinedine Zidane showed how the power of Youtube to quickly aggregate viewers. Another dramatic incident was the Whitehouse Press Core Dinner with Stephen Colbert. This quickly became an internet favorite, so much so that CSPAN forced Youtube to remove it from the site. Other examples are the Daily Show and Colbert Show. These are very popular cable channel programs that offer fake news (Daily Show) and fake punditry (Colbert Show). These show have lives of their own on the cable channels, but with clips of the shows loaded shortly after they air it adds a whole new life to these shows.

Paramount Pictures is using the platform for another use and that is promotion of the film “An inconvenient truth” (which I have seen and recommend). They have built an online profile and movie channel with the trailers and even a parody clip from Futurama with Al Gore promoting the movie. You can see that here.

YouTube was founded in February, 2005 by Chad Hurley (CEO), Steve Chen (CTO), and Jawed Karim (advisor), who were all early employees of PayPal. Prior to PayPal, Hurley studied design at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Chen and Karim studied computer science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The domain name “YouTube.com” was activated on February 15, 2005, with the website launching shortly thereafter.

The site’s popularity surged in December 2005 when it hosted the popular Lazy Sunday clip from a Saturday Night Live broadcast. In February, 2006, NBC Universal asked YouTube to remove several copyrighted NBC video clips, including Lazy Sunday and 2006 Olympics clips, from their site.

Recently the major networks have a change in heart in the attitude to Youtube. Sean McManus, President of CBS News had a change of heart after meeting Chad Hurley.

Sean McManus, president of CBS News and Sports, now says that CBS is rethinking its attitude. “You’ve got to find the fine line between the great promotion YouTube gives a network, and protecting our rights,” he told TV Week. “Our inclination now is, the more exposure we get from clips like that, the better it is for CBS News and the CBS television network, so in retrospect we probably should have embraced the exposure, and embraced the attention it was bringing CBS, instead of being parochial and saying ‘let’s pull it down.’”

Youtube represents sea change in how video is used, consumed and shared. In it’s short life You tube has fundamentally shifted :

• It is the prime social mechanism for the sharing of video clips. Couple this with Tivo and you have a killer combination
• It is being used as a live journal/diary for teenagers. They are using webcams and Youtube as a video diary system where they can share thoughts and feelings. These are predominately female diaries.
• The use of video cameras inside mobile phones and Youtube has exploded the phenomena mobloging.
• The use of the Youtube platform as a promotional tool, otherwise known as Viral Video. A good example is the Mentos/Coke Video
• A repository for archive video including old music videos and TV show clips.

Youtube is fast becoming a online cultural icon along with Google and Yahoo. The challenge for YouTube is how to build a business around this community. I have no doubt that they can do this like Myspace, and Google have done before. The question is what challenges will face Youtube along the way.

The Watercooler metaphor is a good start to understand the power of the short video to bring people together. It just makes the watercooler talk just that more interesting.
