Marlborough Region – South Island New Zealand

New Zealand is a small country of 4 Million people deep in the South Pacific, 12 hours flying time from the West Coast of North America and 3 hours East of Australiaâ€™s largest city Sydney.

New Zealandâ€™s landscape is formed by the southern most aspect of the pacific Ring-of-Fire or more correctly The Circum Pacific Seismic Belt. What this means is that New Zealand is blessed with some of the most spectacularly rugged landscape in the world formed from millions of years of earth movement which explains why it was chosen as the location for Middle Earth when the Lord of the Rings Trilogy was being filmed.

New Zealand is made up of two major islands, the North and the South as well as numerous other islands and territories. The two islands are linked by a car ferry system run by the appropriately named InterIslander. This is where our journey began, in the loading bay at the Wellington wharf at 4-30am just after Christmas Day.

I had been to the South Island several times before, always on holiday. Having grown up in Wellington, the ferry was a major impediment for Northerners to travel to the mainland (as the South Islanders call their home). Unfortunately I spend less time in the south than I would have liked. Now living predominately in the Northern Hemisphere, it was time to reacquaint ourselves with the home of Bilbo Baggins.

Because we were traveling in the heart of the summer rush we ended up having to take on the 6am ferry sailing, a sailing filled with bleary eyed travelers downing copious amounts of coffee and toast in a vain attempt to brush off the 3am wakeup call. Indeed some of the more budget conscious travelers (read backpackers) had slept at the ferry terminal which gets quite chilly with the southerly wind off the harbor.

We had set of from our home north of Wellington at 4am, our small BMW laden with one weeks supply of picnic and hiking supplies. A tip for traveling through New Zealand, you cannot go 100 meters without coming across a picnic table and park so pack provisions to have a picnic in the park on each day of your travels.

The 3 1/2 hour sailing was uneventful, we watched as the sun broke over Wellington harbour and out into the Cook Strait, named after the explorer James Cook. We arrived into Picton Wharf to be greeted with a warm sunny day, about 9-30am in the morning.

Picton is the reception, the first impression of the South Island that a tourist would see and it has risen to that challenge. As a youngster I remember Picton consisting of a Fish and Chip shop and a Pub, a place to relieve oneself then move on.

Picton has most certainly shed that image. It is now a trendy downtown tourist destination in itâ€™s own right. Picton showed off the warm summer day by fabulous cafes, live music, scores of restaurants and an extremely robust tourist trade. To me it looked like a mix of foreign and local kiwi tourists enjoying the start of the summer holidays.

From Picton there are numerous activities on and off the water you can choose from, there is no reason to head straight out of town to Nelson or Christchurch.

We visited Waikawa Bay and took a stunning drive along Queen Charlotte Drive to Havelock North, the home of Lord Rutherford, Nobel prize winner and father of modern nuclear science. Havelock is also known as the green shell mussel capital of the world.

The goal of the first couple days however was to explore the famous Marlborough region, the home of medal winning wines from Montana, Oyster Bay, Cloudy Bay, and Kim Crawford among many others. New Zealand is well known for itâ€™s whites from the Wairau Valley.

The Marlborough wine region stretches from just south of Picton all the way to Kaikoura at the southern end. For our base we chose The Copthorne Hotel in Blenheim, a boutique hotel in the city center.

After settling into the hotel, we scoped out the city. Just like Picton, Blenheim has turned into real upscale feel, not as upscale as Niagara on the Lake (Ontario) or St Helena (California), more like Buellton, (California), fun but not presumptuous. Itâ€™s roots still lay in itâ€™s farming community but it has made way for the younger wine-seeking crowds with bar, restaurants and cafes.

Blenheimâ€™s vineyards are set out in a box pattern throughout the floor of the valley. A quick trip to the info center or asking the hotelier will produce a number of wine trail maps you can follow. We had in mind a number of the more famous vineyards available (see above) and we created an itinerary for the next day. We found a great spot for dinner and then retreated to the comfort of the hotel pool to watch the sun go down, of course sampling the native grape.

We made a beeline in the morning to Annieâ€™s Cafe. One of the most popular food establishment, it is open early for some free-trade Java. What people donâ€™t realize is that New Zealand has some of the finest coffee establishments anywhere.

You can be in the middle of nowhere but be certain that a world class latte or espresso is just around the corner (there is no such thing as Tim Hortons or Krispee Kremes here). With an abundant supply of fresh ingredients, you can find all sorts of home-made pies, cakes and biscuits to sample including a huge range of organic produce.

We spend an enjoyable day or two sampling the wine, treats and senses in the center of the Marlborough district. Included in our trip was Hunter Wines, the Boutique Chocolate Factory and the huge Montana Brancott Winery to the south of the city.

State Highway One continues to the south of the city and winds its way down to Kiakoura, the whale watch capital of New Zealand. Because of unusual underwater trenches off the coast of this small coastal town, Kaikoura is home to numerous seal colonies, the occasion penguin, dusky dolphins and giant sperm whales.

Kaikoura is a small town growing up fast. The tourism industry has arrived to turn this town into a smaller semblance of its bigger brother Lake Taupo. The main street is crawling with restaurants and bars with numerous campervans (RVs) and rental cars complete with tourists from all round the world.

We took the obligatory coffee and shopping session, stopping in to chat with some new sights including a brand new Kia Kaha store, a chain of clothing stores part owned by US PGA champion Michael Campbell.

Our prime directive was to spend some time with the seal colonies to the north and south of the city where we able to shoot some stunning photos. These are now proudly part of my flickr collection.

Although DOC (Department of Conservation) rules require that you maintain a distance of 10 meters (30ft) from wildlife, I was able to get close in to photograph them in the afternoon sunning themselves on the rocks and generally making mischief of them all. I shot with both a Sony DSC-W55 hand held and my trusty Canon Digital Rebel (Its not how many pixels you have it is what you do with it).

Whale Watch Kaikoura is an extremely professional and busy operation. Housed in the former Railway terminal, it is owned by the local iwi (Maori Tribe) Kati Kuri. They operate tours by busing 30 odd strong groups to the South Bay terminal where they house purpose-built whale watching vessels.

We headed out into the South Pacific for about 45 minutes to look for the whales surfacing. They have a boat stationed out there each day to look for whales to minimize time on the water. Whales surface typically for 15 minutes then dive for 45 minutes. The crew understands the cycle well and, with the aid of sonar equipment, find the whales quickly. Once a whale is sighted, the boat maneuvers into position and the crowd can go outside and up top the vessel to watch and take pictures.

Once you see the whale for the first time, it is a heart stopping experience. The majesty of the worldâ€™s largest mammal is hard to describe. To the Maori, the whale holds deep spiritual significance and it is not hard to understand why.

I have seen a lot of animals in the wild on my travels, Leopard, Lynx, Black Bear and Cheetah. These animals rank very high on the list of must see. We were able to see two whales surface, rehabilitate themselves and return to the ocean with a flourish of the tail.

The above picture was the result of a fast lenses and a very strong arm. We had 10 meter swells which made the boat lurch from side to side. On the way back we were met by a school of dusky dolphins who seems to take pleasure in performing in front of a crowd.

We cheered at they performed 360 jumps, twisted and synchronized swam around the boat. We left the boat understanding why thousands of people come here each year to grab a glimpse of these creatures.

On my travels throughout the world, one of the common discussion points of those that knew or experienced New Zealand, was the shear variety of experiences you can have traveling in Kiwiland. This is especially true for those that have traveled to Queenstown, the worldâ€™s outdoor extreme capital where bungy jumping was invented. But that is for another day.

ANZAC stands for Australia New Zealand Army Corps. The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps was the original ANZAC formation. It served at Gallipoli under the command of General William Birdwood and comprised the Australian 1st Division and the New Zealand and Australian Division. The Gallipoli Campaign took place at Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey from 25 April 1915 to 9 January 1916, during the First World War.Â A joint British Empire and French operation was mounted to capture the Ottoman capital of Istanbul (It was still referred to as Constantinople by the Europeans), and secure a sea route to Russia. The attempt failed, with heavy casualties on both sides.

The three Australian and one New Zealand mounted brigades were employed as infantry with the ANZACs during the Gallipoli campaign. The Australian 2nd Division began to arrive from Australia in August 1915 and some battalions saw action on Gallipoli in the final months of the campaign. What is not well know is that from time to time other countries served under the collective command of the ANZACs including 7th and 29th Brigades of the Indian Mounted Artillery, Ceylon Planters Rifle Corp, Royal Navy and British and Irish Divisions.

Two Countries Come of Age

This also marks the first time that the furtherest reaches of the British Commonwealth participated as peers with the United Kingdom and represented a true coming of age. The Gallipoli campaign showed that these countries, both with less than 20 years of independence could make a valuable contribution to the efforts of the British Commonwealth. The ANZAC day then is also a mark of independence for the two countries.

ANZAC day now remembers the sacrifice of all service members of both the Australian and New Zealand Defense Forces. It is held on 25th April each year and commences with a dawn service at the respective cities War Memorials. It includes veterans from the first and second world wars, ANZACs that served in Vietnam and Korean Wars, and their contemporaries that have served in numerous United Nations peacekeeping operations in the Middle East, Cyprus, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Timor, Soloman Islands, Egypt, Iraq and South Korea among many others.

Recently New Zealand’s Special Air Service (SAS) (modeled after the British SAS and equivalent to USA’s Delta Force) have been requested by the United States for special missions in Afghanistan. This will be the fourth tour for the elite force, the New Zealand SAS entered Afghanistan shortly after 9/11 2001 under British command to prepare for the eventual invasion of that country.

The latest iteration of the term ANZAC was used in September 2006 as The ANZAC Battle Group which is responsible for the UN peacekeeping efforts in East Timor called Operation Astute (which also includes Malaysia and Portugal).

ANZAC Spirit

Anzac stood, and still stands, for reckless valor in a good cause, for enterprise, resourcefulness, fidelity, comradeship, and endurance that will never own defeat. – Charles Bean

The concept of ANZAC Spirit is deeply embedded in the national character of both nations, concepts of mateship (comradeship), dignity and honour in the face of adversity. There are however criticisms of this notion that label is as masculine and exclusionary, not recognizing the contributions of other parties in the forging of nationhood. There has concerns over why should we look so eagerly for “stereo-typical reaffirmation of our character” [SMH], and that the contribution of the Gallipoli “misadventure”. These criticisms may be valid but they miss the broader point: The ANZAC spirit are ideals we celebrate each year and have been demonstrated by people that have come before us.

As people we are prone to failure, but not to celebrate these values and the ideas behind them simply because the frailty of human nature would be even worse. Not to have ideals to guide our character means we are prone to measure our actions within the confines of an individual rather that the ideals of many. We celebrate our countries because of our ideals, not of ruthless individualism, but of kinship, practicality and a collective responsiblity to each other and the world we live in.

It is something I hope as a traveling ANZAC (also read Kiwi) that we share with others on our journeys and we show to those friends who visit our shores.

Whilst Kiwiland is inhabited by both hobbits and Dark Lords, according to Forbes Traveller, New Zealand is an ultra safe destination for travelling humans:

Kiwis are much more into harming themselves (via rugby or bungee jumping) than assaulting others. As a result, New Zealand boasts among the lowest violent crime rates in the Western world. The islands are too far south to attract tropical cyclones, too far north for Antarctic blizzards. The last fatal earthquake was 1968.

Also included in the list was Singapore, the Swiss, Bhutan and our friends the Irish.

The French are touring New Zealand at the moment and are suffering at the hands of the All Blacks however.

Kiwi Cyclists can now look forward to a $50M spend to create a series of interlinked “Great Rides” to form a National Cycleway system.

“I see the national cycleway developing from a series of “Great Rides” through some of New Zealand’s most beautiful scenery. Our long-term goal is to create a network that links these “Great Rides” into a uniquely New Zealand set of cycling experiences that connects and passes through our cities.” says Prime Minister John Keyes.

The routes for these rides would be influenced by existing cycleways, facilities and tourism attractions.

Ministry of Tourism figures for the year to last September show 45,000 of the 2,469,064 international visitors took part in a cycling sport. The cycling tourists spent $199 million on their trips – excluding international airfares – an average of $4386 each.

The average spending of all international tourists is $2692. Cycling tourists on average stayed in New Zealand for 49.2 nights, more than twice the average length of stay of 20.9 nights. Britons make up the biggest number of cyclists at 19 per cent, followed by Australians at 17 per cent and Americans at 9 per cent. An economic study done last year on the Otago Central Rail Trail – New Zealand’s longest and most successful cycling trail – found only about 30 per cent of its visitors were international tourists.

The latest sporting strips for both the All Blacks (Rugby) and Silver Ferns (Netball) were unveiled in Auckland today. The white alternate strip to the famous black shirts are used in certain circumstances.
A new all-white All Blacks jersey was unveiled to be used as a second strip when the All Blacks were playing outside New Zealand and there was a clash in jerseys. Members of both Silver Ferns and All Blacks teams were involved in the design and development of their new kits.

Netballers Casey Williams, Maria Tutaia, Irene van Dyk and Laura Langman were joined by All Blacks Joe Rokocoko, Keven Mealamu, Tony Woodcock and Ali Williams to model each team’s new playing strip.

Arnie Says No Mucho Vista To Queenstown

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s advisors have denied the former body builder and Hollywood actor is going to build a multi-million dollar home on his Lake Wakatipu (Queenstown) property.

However local Warwick Weber, of architecture and engineering firm Weber Consulting, refused to discuss the project: “Our confidentiality agreement on the project is indefinite,” he told reporters. Foreigners are only required to report investments that are over $100M or are on listed land such as Shania Twain’s sheep station.

The speculation is that the plans have been drawn up but a decision has not been made to start the project. Sources familiar with the project suggest that the political climate in California does not make for good optics at the moment for the Governor to embark on an expensive home in another country.

Queenstown also has the holiday homes of John Travolta and Kelly Preston, Peter Jackson, Shania Twain and kiwi film star Sam Neil (Jurassic Park).

Aucklanders last weekend built New Zealand’s first ultra long clothsline for charity.

Organizers estimate that approximately 6000 laundry items or 500 loads of washing was hungout in Mission Bay Auckland at the Wash Festival. The hangathon was in aid of the New Zealand Red Cross who received all of the used clothing.

Doctor Who Daleks Get Weta Treatment (Video)

Growing up, the scariest alien of them all on our television was the Daleks from Doctor Who.Â Daleks are organisms from the planet Skaro, integrated within a tank-like mechanical casing. The resulting creatures are a powerful race bent on universal conquest and domination, utterly without pity, compassion or remorse. Their ruthless conquest was the constant battle of the Doctor and his various companions.

Doctor Who is a British science fiction television programme produced by the BBC. The programme follows the adventures of a mysterious traveller known as “the Doctor” who travels through time in a TARDIS, a 1950s style blue Police Phone Box.

The series is the longest-running science fiction television show in the world, running from 1963 until 1996. The series was resurrected in 2005 and still runs today with the eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith.

The trademark DALEK is owned by the BBC, who with clever foresight secured the rights in 1964 and continues to this day to be a revenue earner for the corporation.

Weta Workshop is a licensee for the Doctor Who since 2008. They produce a range of very high quality Doctor Who replicas. Dave Tremont is a Senior Workshop Artist at Weta remembers being scared to death:

Having the crap scared out of me watching a Dalek approaching the terrified Barbara, actually it was just the sucker arm that was approaching Barbara. I donâ€™t remember anything from the caveman story but remember a lot from â€˜The Dead Planetâ€™. I would watch the stories in absolute terror and fits of shaking but could not stop watching. I was mortified if we had to go out and would miss an episode or would go and bug the neighbors if our TV broke down (which was often).

Peter Jackson Talks Lovely Bones

While the rest of use are worrying about the economy and whether we have jobs, there is one person who is having one hell of a year and has so much work he does not know what to do. And that is Mr Peter Jackson of Manuka St, Miramar Wellington.

While tackling two Tintin Films and two Hobbit films and over $500M in movie making purchase orders, Mr Jackson talked to USA Today.

On the subject of novel adaptation:

In the case of The Lovely Bones, I felt that it was subject matter not often dealt with in film, and with a tone that is also rare. Losing loved ones is something we all have to deal with, and when that story is partly told from the loved one’s point of view, it becomes quite interesting â€” especially with Susie’s sense of humor. Add to that the fact that Susie is killed by a man living just down the street, and it now becomes a very unique thriller.
