Station Wagons Coming Back to North America?

Holden EH Wagon

As the saying goes, what comes around, goes around, so to with the Station Wagon. A species of vehicle that has disappeared for a long time from the North American continent is poised for a comeback with a sport wagon from Pontiac.

Holden Sportwagon

Holden released this weekend, the ‘Sportwagon’, a revamp of the popular Holden Commodore Wagon that never disappeared from the South Pacific. It is slated to be the Pontiac G8 Sportwagon for the NA market.

Station Wagons disappeared from the US market in favour of the (CAFE standard avoiding) Minivan and the SUV. The minivan never took off in other markets because it was consider an expensive alternative to a 4 cylinder station wagon and only the US mandated through the CAFE standards that the motor companies produce more large vehicles at the expense of station wagons (law of unintended CAFE consequences).

Nonetheless they are poised to make a comeback with Pontiac (and Dodge)  as consumers turn away from SUVs and other large vehicles back toward variants of 5 door wagons.

Cadillac BLS Wagon

Cadillac has created the BLS wagon, a wagon (estate) configuration for the European market which may or may not turn up in North America.
