Lone Microsoft defender Ed Bott points out some obvious examples of the comparison of Windows Media Center and Apple iTV.
Huh. Anyone who owns a copy of Windows XP Media Center Edition or is using the Windows Vista beta doesn’t need to rediscover anything. Browsing by album cover has been part of the Media Center interface for four years. (See the Vista version for yourself here and here and here.) In fact, Media Center PCs support TV tuners that allow you to browse recorded TV using thumbnails
as well.
Apple takes back the copycat title
This was exactly the sentiment that was stated when the iPod was released 3 years ago.
The missing point is that Apple has successfully proved that they can create a great user experience, exactly the skill that Microsoft is terrible at. Windows Media Center is a dud because it is the wrong metaphor for users. Where as at Microsoft it is all about the software, at Apple it is all about the experience and the package.
