AOL CTO Resigns over Data Leak

August 21st, 2006 · 2 Comments

In a more refreshing view of Corporate America the AOL CTO Maureen Govern has resigned over the data leak incident.

“Two AOL employees have been fired and its chief technology officer is resigning after the release of Web search data from thousands of AOL members prompted widespread criticism of the company.”

I would like to give her the benefit of the doubt and she resigned out of principle and that some one had to be responsible ultimately for the mistake. This very unusual in this day and age of no responsibility Management and Government where mistakes are often brushed under the carpet.

Now all we need from Maureen is a public statement that she took the stand on principle and apologizes to the customers that were affected by this… (picture Kiwibloke starring into the air dreaming of past days of responsible managment, ethics and accountability…..)

Dismissing the employess directly related is one thing, but can the CTO be held responsible for actions she may have known nothing about?

I must say, though, some of these search queries are hilarious - “how to tell the wife about affair”

Thats the “Ken Lay” defence. That is really not an excuse. Accepting responsibility for the actions of the people on your watch is a sign of strength not weakness.
She created the environment whereby this occured and therefore she is responsible.
